Chenille Slipcovered Headboard

I finally figured out how to cover this great headboard. I had attempted and failed with two other more complicated, fitted slipcovers. I was beginning to think that I'd just scrap the whole thing. However, in one last attempt, I slipcovered it with about one yard of pink chenille I pick up for $1.00 at a garage sale. I LOVE it! Even more than my original ideas!!!

This headboard is going in Sadie's room so we have a bed to offer guests when they stay with us. It'll be a tight squeeze, but so is the rest of our house...

I basically made a pillowcase, but rounded the corners to better fit the shape of the headboard. My first rounded corner was not tight enough. The second one fits like a glove!

The most difficult part was deciding how to finish the edge. It wasn't even when I trimmed it (it is not trimmed in this picture). I did not have enough fabric to turn it and create a proper hem.

You can see here where the fabric was cut wonky and did not match the selvage end once I trimmed it. The selvage end didn't need to be hemmed but I wanted to do something to the cut edge to prevent fraying. The bottom of the slipcover falls below the top of the mattress, so it didn't have to be pretty. Think, think, think. Think cheap. Think what I have on hand.

Ahh...white ribbon

Perfect and pretty! It makes it look more finished. Love it!

We're buying a twin size mattress this week and setting up the rest of Sadie's room. I'll post pictures when it's completed!

I've been trying to finish up projects just like this one before we get back into the routine of our homeschool days. My goal with each project has been to try to use what I already own or spend as little as possible. I've found ways to work around "problems" by thinking creatively. I've also visited the thrift store and garage sales to find missing pieces to finish projects.

Total cost of project:
headboard: free from a friend
chenille: $1.00
ribbon: @ $.50 (or less)

Total cost: $1.50

Project completed: check
Project completed on the cheap: double check
