{Home} LOVE Marquee Makeover

Last fall, I fell in love with marquees.  Maybe it was because it was the trendy thing to do.  Maybe it was because everyone was trying to find one and they were flying off the shelves and it was the thrill of the hunt.  It seemed that everyone who was anyone has snagged a JOY marquee from Target.

One day, I found one.  YES!!!!!

A few weeks ago, I happened to walk down the Christmas isles at Target and here was this beauty...

LOVE...

...and I loved it so much, I brought it home.

But, you know I couldn't just leave it alone...it needed a makeover to be more "me."  I took the globes and lights off the metal letters.  Then I snagged a pallet from our basement.  It was part of our storage system... I was counting on the fact that Mike loves me so much, he wouldn't care if I stole part of his storage system.  Haha!

I knew I wanted the letters to hang vertically and the pallet boards weren't long enough to just place several next to each other.  I had to cut each board to 12" and place those horizontally to fit the length I needed. (about 4 & 1/2 ft.).

Have you ever taken apart a pallet?  It's hard.  Mike helped me whack it apart.  He also helped me with the chop saw.  Someday I'm gonna learn how to run that baby!

I bought 1" x 2" pine boards to mount the pallet boards onto.  I was told that if I had pre-drilled my holes, the pine wouldn't have split.  But, seriously, I didn't have time for that.  And I take shortcuts.  Sometimes that works in my favor; sometimes it doesn't.  This time I think it's fine because the pine doesn't show at all.  I prevented the whole board from splitting by staggering the placement of the screws.  I used 1 & 1/4" flat head screws for this part.

After the boards were attached together, I sanded the top and sides a bit to smooth the cut edges, but also to "clean" the boards a bit.  They has quite a bit of dust and gunk on them from years in our basement.

I love the rustic, uneven, random rusty screw holed look.

Next...it was time to makeover the letters.  Last year, I had seen several people paint their letters, use glitter, etc. but I am a fabric lover through and through.  I have an amazing stash and I knew that adding fabric was the way I needed to make the marquee reflect me.

I used a vintage curtain panel for my fabric.  Part of the reason for using this fabric is because I hope to hang the marquee right next to a grouping of family pictures we just had taken in October.  I made the cutest little tie for Silas out of this yellow fabric.  It'll be a nice way to echo that fabric print next to our photos!

I rough cut the fabric around the letters.  I adhered the fabric with one layer of modge podge and let that dry overnight.  Next, I trimmed the fabric using an exacto knife, a rotary cutter, and fine tipped scissors.  And patience.  I didn't think it would be so challenging to trim around each of the letters.  I did not trim the holes for the lights/globes.

After trimming all the edges, I painted another layer of modge podge on top of the fabric.  I suppose you could leave this step off, but I wanted to make my fabric more durable since it'll hang in a busy area of our home.  Plus, I figured it'd be easier to dust...if I dusted.  Ha!

The second coat of modge podge dried over night.  I used my exacto knife to cut an X in each hole to insert the light and globe again.

It took one episode of White Collar to put the globes and lights back in the metal letters.  (Do you watch White Collar?  No?!  It's hubby's and my show...and we're almost out of Netflix episodes...insert frowny face.)

SOOOOO, as I was putting it back together, I realized that the cord for plugging it in was at the top of the marquee.  Ack!  About 4 feet too short to reach my outlet.  It's how the wiring was designed and there wasn't a way to switch it around.  So, for a moment, I had a panic attack and thought I'd have to become an electrician or bribe an electrician I know, but then common sense kicked in.  I realized that there would be room behind the pallet for hiding an extension cord.  Remember I mounted the pallet boards on a 1" x 2" board?  Perfect solution!  All I needed to do is gather the excess cord and tape it up so all that hangs out from the bottom of the pallet is the length needed to plug it in.

The next morning, I used long nails to hang the letters on the board.  My two littlest cuties were fascinated with the lights.  It was quite pretty given the grey, rainy morning.  We turned off all the other lights in the room and they sat in front of it eating their breakfast.  So sweet!

I still haven't hung this up yet.  I need my hubby's help to drill and pound in an anchor in the wall.  It's a bit heavy.  But it's gorgeous.  And fabulous.

And I love it!!!

You can see above that the wires have a mind of their own.  I used a little tape to secure the loose bits to the backs of the letters so they wouldn't show.  There is a teeny bit of wire that is visible between the letters but that can't be helped.

It's just propped up against the wall right now.  And this isn't even the wall it's gonna be hung on.  It was just the wall with the best light.  Ha!

Have a blessed day, friends!!!

{Change One Thing} Kid's Bathroom Stool

It's time for {Change One Thing} again!  And this week is full of color and oh, boy, do I love color!!!

But first...What is {Change One Thing}?

The idea is that you shop your house (because we are frugal and it will make us see and think differently!) for one thing you can change that will make an impact in what you see day in and day out. It could be any kind of change, big or little, like a different picture next to your reading chair, or moving your potted plant to the dining room table, or swapping a rug or piece of furniture from one room to another...

You decide what one thing will brighten your day because little things do matter.

A little background this week... We moved into our home about a year and a half ago.  The wall colors were mostly all neutral enough for me to live with and even like quite a bit.  I was happy that we didn't need to do a whole lot of painting initially.

Looking back, it seems that life has moved at whirlwind pace since we unpacked our moving truck and I am so ready to dive in and really make this house our home.  It feels like we've lived here forever and that's a good thing.  But now I know this house.  I know how the light hits each room during each season.  I know how we use each room.  I have a pretty clear direction as to where my decorating style is going and how it could work in this house.  And now I want to put my personal stamp on it!

This is our kid's bathroom.  Our home was built in 1968 and still has the vintage tiles to prove it.  But we work with what we have and we are grateful!  It does help that most of it is still in nice condition, too!  After a fresh coat of white paint, this bathroom will be crisp, clean, and colorful!!!

I bought new towels for the kids today.  Each kiddo will get their own color mostly so I will know who has left their wet towel laying on the hardwood floor...ahem...

And so, here is my one thing...

This wooden stool was a $12 find at an antiques mall many years ago.  I painted it black to coordinate with our bathroom at our old house.

One sample can of "Vintage Teal" paint by Valspar that was all ready in my paint stash...

So pretty now...

Bring on the color!!!

Won't you join me and "Change One Thing?"

If you do, please leave a comment and a link to your blog post!!! I'd love to see what changes you make!

{Change One Thing} Printer Stand

It's Tuesday and guess what that means?!  It's time for the second week of "Change One Thing!"

Well, hellooooo?!  What is "Change One Thing?"

Here is my one thing this week...

BEFORE

First hint - this fabulous thrift store treasure I found back in the fall, I think?!  It's been sitting in the basement with a box of stuff on it that needed to go to the thrift store.  Oh yay, that box is gone and I'm finally using this vintage typewriter desk!  At least that's what I think it is...!

Second hint - okay, it's not really a second hint, but it is a different angle...

AFTER

Messy to neat.  Excess to necessity.  Blah brown to vibrant blue.

This stand is in the "school area" of our family room.  I kept our copier/printer here (obviously) because we use it all the time.  The basket on the shelf holds Sadie's "school books" and four clipboards - a useful tool that we started using this year.  The basket on the floor holds my lesson plan books and planners.

I suppose one could argue that I changed more than one thing, but hey, that's all right, right?!  The point is that I looked around my house and found items to use to change this spot around...

I'm still working on settling the displaced items we are keeping from the before picture - things like crayons, markers, construction paper, math manipulatives, etc.  The desk will become a nightstand for my six year old.  Recently, I've been on a pretty intense sort, purge, and organize kick, so you can be sure that some items are taking a hike, too!

This feels so good.

Won't you join me and "Change One Thing?"

If you do, please leave a comment and a link to your blog post!!!  I'd love to see what changes you make!

{Home} Change One Thing

I long for spring to arrive!  Too many days in my home leave me feeling kinda bummed out especially when the sun is hiding behind overcast skies.  Too many days staring at the same walls, the same decorations, the same colors, the same brown-grey-white mix outside my windows.  And yet, I have to be at home to accomplish what needs to be done around the house and with homeschooling.

So, I have a fun idea!  I'm calling it "Change One Thing."  The idea being that you shop your house (because we are frugal and it will make us see and think differently!) for one thing you can change that will make an impact in what you see day in and day out.  It could be any kind of change, big or little, like a different picture next to your reading chair, or moving your potted plant to the dining room table, or swapping a rug or piece of furniture from one room to another...

You decide what one thing will brighten your day because little things do matter.

Oooh, la, la!  Can't you just picture me making a fabulous dinner tonight and for the rest of winter with this happy rug borrowed from our library?!  Grin!

This makes me happy (even if the rug is a smidge too big for the space)!

Won't you join in and change one thing?
I promise it will be fun!!!

If you do, please comment and leave a link to your blog post so I can be happy with you!!!

Fireplaces are for More Than...

 ...fires and pretty mantle decorations.

Fireplaces can become the library station in your family room where your school area is located if you choose...besides, doing this takes the pressure off finding just the right do-dads for the mantle.

...and you'll also be able to capture sweet pictures of the resident Berenstain Bear lover...

Vintage Sheet Lamp Shade

I've been on a project kick over the past few weeks!  It feels so satisfying to be creative and make our home cozy and fun!

I love the idea of taking common items and altering them to be unique to my home.

I could have a boring, white lampshade (from Target) but why would I want to do that when I could have a colorful shade covered in a vintage sheet remnant?!

Gather a few crafting supplies and a lovely vintage sheet.

After trimming the fabric to the approximate size I needed, I used basting spray to help the fabric stick to the shade.

I rolled the shade along the fabric, pressing any bubbles out as I rolled.

Trim the fabric about 1/2 inch bigger than your shade.

Fold the cut edge under for a finished edge on the outside of the shade and hot glue it down (see the top of the picture where the fabric pattern doesn't match up).  Turn the trimmed edges to the inside of the shade using hot glue to keep it in place.  I hot glued ribbon inside the top and bottom edge of the shade to hide the unfinished fabric edge and make it look prettier.

Secure the lamp shade back on your lamp and sit back and enjoy!

The funny thing...I really like the lamp base and the covered shade in the evening with the light on, but not so much during the daytime.  I'm thinking I might switch up some shades in my house and cover a different shade for this lamp base.

Hey, it's only one more project to add to my always growing list...grin!

Sweetest Little Helper

I have the sweetest little helper who gravitates to the kitchen at the slightest activity.  I love having her by my side.  Today we got to break in my KitchenAid Mixer with a batch of chocolate chip cookies...

Pigtail braids...a daily request.

The following sequence of pictures was Sadie, in her usual story telling state, this time all about how much she loves to eat cookies and lick the chocolate and wipe her hands and smile when she's all done eating...  Love her tales!

Just one more cookie, please?!

How could I say no to that sweet face?!
