Teamwork

There is no denying the fact that I need some assistance in getting various jobs completed around our house.  With six family members home essentially all day long every day, our house is bound to get messy. Well, I've recruited the cutest helpers I could find!

Sadie and Isaac often team up with certain chores.  On this particular day, I overheard a sweet conversation between the two of them...

"Sadie, you are good at cleaning the mirror!"

"Thanks, Isaac!  You are doing a great job like me!"

"Sadie, we are doing a good job building each other up like Mama said."

"Yes, we are.  We are best buddies and are nice to each other..."

Having found ourselves recently with a lot frustrated, critical words coming from our mouths, I have been challenging the kids and myself with this Scripture...

"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen...Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as Christ God forgave you."  Ephesians 4:29,32

How encouraging to hear this conversation and know that God is changing our hearts for His Glory!

{Homeschool} Learning Board

I am so thankful to have a dedicated spot for our school area in our family room.  It's not a separate room in our home but I'm not sure I'd want that anyhow.  I like that I can be in our kitchen or living room and still see what's happening with everyone.  Our school area is a great place to work and leave books, projects, etc. out when we move onto something else...like meals.  Do you know how much I appreciate not needing to clear our table every time I serve a meal?!

Because we have a school area, I'm getting on board with the idea of having "schoolish" type things hanging on the walls.  In the past I've been totally opposed to that idea but there are some things that we need to review every day.  It is much easier to simply glance at our new learning board than it is to pull out a binder full of review pages.

I thrifted the cork board (and really, really nice wooden) frame ($4) and covered it with wrapping paper to hide the many, many pin holes in the matte board.  I photocopied items from Isaac's Saxon 1 Math books that we need to review every day and put it all together on the board.

Typical school day...doesn't it look so idyllic?!  Ha, ha!

We do have our shining moments like this.  And then we have our not-so-shiney moments, too!

Isaac wanted to teach Sadie the ABC's.  I love these large foam letters better than any other ABC manipulative we've tried.  I picked them up at The Dollar General several years ago for $1 per package.  Each package had 26 letters and I must have purchased five or six packages.  They are lightweight, colorful, store easily, and have held up really well.

Here's Isaac's (almost) finished board waiting to be hung on the wall.  I need to add his birthday, our address, and phone number.  I still have space to add other items and will change things around as needed.  So far, it has proven to be very handy!

As a bonus, this board has added a touch of color in this room.  It's just what we needed in so many ways!

The Fab Five

I've been wanting to take photos of my five on our bed for some time now.  This morning brought sunny skies to brighten our room, caught up laundry for bright colored shirts, and no agenda other than living life at home today.  Perfect elements for an amateur photo shoot!

Honestly, I can't decide which is my favorite shot...

I'd love to purchase one of these photos as a large print or a wrapped canvas print to hang in our family room or living room.  In large part, that's why I chose the bright colors for their shirts...love me some color!!!

Love these faces even more...can't imagine life without them!!!

Homeschooling with the Little-er Ones

I'm thankful for a great start to our sixth year homeschooling.  If our first six weeks is any indication of success, we will be very successful this year!  I just know it!!!

I'm very happy with our curriculum choices, our decision to participate in a full day co-op once a week, and the fact that we actually did start school in mid-August.  In fact, as much as I am ready to meet our little man, I'm a little sad that our school routine will be altered because it is working so well for us.

Sadie takes time most mornings to color, glue, cut, watch her ABC video (a Leapfrog DVD), play play dough, paint, and convince at least one brother to read her a book or two.  When she's not busy doing that, she often can be found on the couch with her favorite toys piled all around her chatting away and singing as if the whole world was listening...

A friend had recommended several preschool skills books that she enjoyed using with her daughter.  I hesitated purchasing them online given that they were $8.00 - $14.00 each.  However, when I found them at The Christmas Tree Shop this summer, I snatched them up at $3.50 - $4.50 each.  Sadie loved making pizza this morning though I ended up cutting the pieces out for her.  She cuts but only in straight lines right now!  She said, "I'm too little to cut out pepperoni, but I sure like to glue them...and eat them."

Isaac is progressing very quickly with his reading skills.  It's "clicking" with him and we are both very excited to work on phonics and spelling every day (The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading, Explode the Code, All About Spelling).  Here he is playing bingo with sight word print outs from Confessions of a Homeschooler .  He also enjoys math as well giggling throughout when I express surprise - some honest, some for fun - at his correct answers (Saxon Math 1).

I'm constantly reminded of my need to seek the Lord for help both as a mama and as my children's teacher.  God has been faithful to bless our efforts even when I've failed in my own humanness and sin.  Mike and I are committed to making the best decisions for our family and for each of our children.  I'm so thankful for the opportunity to "do life" with my kids day in and day out.  We are a stronger, tight-knit family because of it.

Commit to the Lord whatever you do,
and your plans will succeed.

My Heart Sings

These two make my heart sing more loudly than they sing while playing the piano together.

Serenade, anyone?!

First Day of School?!

Today was our first day of school.  I wanted to get a head start on the year in order to take a few weeks off when the baby arrives.  I knew going to bed last night that our first day might not go as I had planned due to sniffles and coughs bothering all the kids.  Despite a rough night for Sadie and Luke, and consequently, myself, we plunged in to the day...

I actually hesitate to call this our first day but since we did accomplish a few things, I say it totally counts!!!  Oh my, were there bumps...schooling and otherwise, but I'm ending the day feeling good overall!  I spent much of the day just smiling and chuckling over how "imperfect" it truly was.  I kept thanking the Lord that I have the privilege of teaching our children at home and the ability to be flexible throughout.

At morning wake up, the kids enjoyed scrambled eggs, cinnamon rolls, and strawberries.  Each one found small buckets of supplies at their seats...pencils, colored pencils, scissors, erasers, glue sticks, writing paper, personal wipe boards,  Kit Kats, and a special note from Mama.  I forgot to buy chalk to write their names on the buckets, however, Luke remembered that we had sidewalk chalk in the garage!

Sadie received a few different items than the boys - Dora Band-Aids, markers, and purple Play dough but no writing paper, pencils, or colored pencils.  She was quite thrilled with her school stuff!

 Luke is starting 3rd grade!

Isaac is tackling Kindergarten/1st grade!

Elijah is in 5th grade!

Target's dollar section had these cute 24pk. note cards for lunch boxes.  One side is printed with encouraging words while the opposite side has space for a hand written note.

I have been thinking I would send along a note in the boys' lunch boxes on Tuesdays when they go to co-op for the day.  We are all excited for the opportunity they have to take part in a school day each week at The Home School Academy.  Isaac will be participating in the Kindergarten/1st Grade class combining science, children’s literature, geography, history, music, and art using fun interactive unit studies.  Both Elijah and Luke will be take part in history, science, writing/literature, gym, and art/performing arts classes.  I couldn't resist using one of the note cards for each of their buckets this morning!

Sadie loves the ABC's!  Her favorite letter is...can you guess???  It's "S."  She still isn't quite sure if she's right or left handed - she kept switching back and forth to color in these letters - however she has great fine motor skills with both hands.  I am hoping to keep her busy with some preschool activities this year as well as with a whole bunch of hands-on play.

Isaac, my not-so-willing-student, did a wonderful job matching, naming, and coloring shapes.  I'm always thankful for the first few weeks of review to help us ease back into school mode.

Elijah often finds quiet space in the boy's room to help him concentrate.  Who doesn't love to do schoolwork lounging in bed, right?!

"Look, Mama!  I colored it!"

Our Luke had his first sick day of the school year.  Nothing much accomplished except sleep and 15 minutes of piano practice.  Poor guy!  In the afternoon, I implemented "rest time" for everyone...oh, yummy!  Mama got a nap!!!  If you would, pray that we all sleep better tonight!

Finally, on our agenda tonight, with bellies full of homemade chicken noodle soup...

The boys always plead with me to read "just one more chapter" of our read-alouds during the day.  With daddy gone all week, it will be easy to meet their request in the evenings to help settle everyone in for the night.

I'm so glad I took pictures of our first day...we did, indeed, accomplish some things!  It really makes the rest of the "bumps" of the day seem not so big a deal...

If You Make a Bowl of Popcorn...

Are you familiar with the book "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" by Laura Numeroff? It's a humorous story about how a mouse keeps getting distracted and moving onto other projects/thoughts because the current project/thought makes him think of something new...

I've written my own personal version of this cute story...one I think is very worth telling.

If You Make a Bowl of Popcorn...

If you make a bowl of popcorn, your kids will want to sit with you to hear a story...

If your kids want to hear a story, you'll tell them about how you learned to make such delicious homemade popcorn at the beach with Aunt Margo...

Thinking about the beach will remind you of that summer when you realized renting a house on the beach was the vacation of all awesome vacations and how mama and the other two aunties were hoping to get pregnant at the same time...our longed-for beach babies...

Thinking about beach babies will remind you how excited you were to find out you were expecting your fourth baby due in July 2009...a girl...

If you tell the story of Sadie Kathryn's arrival, you'll have to tell about how excited you were to have a son join your family in August 2006...and how you "laughed" about having your third boy...

If you tell about Isaac Joel, then you'll have to tell about how shocked you were to find out Luke Daniel was going to arrive in May 2004...just eighteen months after his older brother was born...

If you think about your oldest son, Elijah Michael, arriving in November 2002, you be reminded how nervous and excited you were about having your first child...

Since you've taken so long telling the beautiful life stories of Sadie, Isaac, Luke, and Elijah, you'll be asked to make just one more bowl of popcorn...

When you are making the second bowl of popcorn, you'll be reminded that now is probably a good time to tell about one more beautiful life...the precious one that will arrive in October 2012...

When you are telling about the new baby coming, you'll be reminded that life is to be celebrated, that all good gifts come from the Lord - the Giver of Life, and that this baby is dearly loved and wanted...no surprises, no regrets...just love, excitement, and anticipation...

And when you share how excited you are about your fifth baby, you'll pray that others will share in your joy and excitement, too...

Baby and Mama looking all springy and bright...11.4 weeks.

Gentle, steady plodding brings us closer and closer to having another reader in our house...

Here he is spelling words I say to him...

This week has been one of new routines:

*rising earlier in the morning (ahem...setting an alarm clock and showering right away)

*focusing solely on school between 8:00-ish until 12:00-ish (attempting to steer clear of being distracted by computer, tv, chores, etc.)

*being more disciplined with Isaac's lessons (he's not fighting it too much)

*keeping Miss Sadie occupied (thank goodness for play dough and stickers and big brothers who help mama out).

A Little Valentine's Love

My littlest love helped me prepare a yummy breakfast...

Each of my loves received a little love note from me...

Everyone slurped up a little reddi whip love in their hot cocoa...

Heart shaped french toast showed my love...and was delicious, too...

My kiddos lovingly defended our kingdom with the aid of their super blow pops...

I struggled this year with having all these plans and ideas and no time or energy to actually carry them out. However, as 10pm rolled around on Valentine's Eve, I realized that giving my love, my time, my energy to do even one special thing the following morning is enough. Then we could carry on with our day as usual because every day has the opportunity to show love in big and small ways...

Who knows when the next "Valentine's" breakfast might appear on the kitchen table...

A Colorful Day

I had an appointment at the salon following lunch today...

I'm so blessed by this life God has given me...

Do you see how I even try to wear bright colors to brighten our lives? It's been a colorful day here in so many ways - a shorts & t-shirt picnic party on the floor, salon styles, lots of snuggling, feeding the birds our leftover waffles, and tucking in schoolwork in all the rest of the cracks...

(A big thanks to Elijah for taking the pictures with mama in them! Great job, buddy!!!)

This is *probably* the last post for today...three in one day...probably why we haven't done any read alouds today yet. He, he!!!

SnapShop Online Photography Course - Day Six

An hour of school with the little(er) ones...preschool and kindergarten.

I spent time playing around with focus points today and setting iso, f/, and shutter speed. If I'm thinking more about composition, then I make more "mistakes" with camera settings. When I'm paying more attention to camera settings, then I "forget" about composition.

I know the solution...practice, practice, practice!!!

I'm happy that I was able to combine everything together to capture some decent shots. However, I think that a lot of my photos are sorta grainy looking and not as sharp as I'd like them. Is this true??? Thoughts??? I think this calls for some more re-reading section two of the course, fiddling with settings, and...

say it with me...

PRACTICE!!!

iso 1600, f/4, 1/200 (wishing her face was turned more toward the window)

iso 1600, f/4, 1/160

iso 1600, f/4, 1/160

iso 400, f/4, 1/200

iso 6400, f/4, 1/400

iso 6400, f/4, 1/400

iso 6400, f/4, 1/400 (Our dining room has one wall red and three blue/grey painted by the former owner...kinda funny how Ike's head hides the corner where the colors meet. The red wall has to go...too dark!)

iso 6400, f/4, 1/400

iso 6400, f/4, 1/400

iso 6400. f/4, 1/400

iso 1600, f/4, 1/125

iso 3200, f/4, 1/200 (I feel the same way about math, too, buddy!!!)

***edited to note: I just re-read section two. I do need to lower my iso (the higher the iso, the more noise!) and then adjust the other two elements accordingly...***

***edited to note #2: I'm so irritated that I approached choosing my camera settings the exact opposite of how Ashley suggested. Grrr.... I mostly liked the pictures before, now I KNOW they are too grainy making me like them less. Composition is decent (in my opinion). Technical is not good. Let's all say it together..."You are WAY too hard on yourself. You've only been shooting in manual for five days..." Sigh.***
