{Mosaic Reviews} The Classical Historian: Medieval History Memory Game

Typically, we are not much of a game playing family.  When we do play games, we always comment on the fun we had or that we should play more often because it's a great activity for family time.  Our children, like ourselves, have varied opinions about playing games.  One son loves to play games and is always asking someone to join him.  One kiddo really dislikes games because he thinks he always loses.  We require him to play at least one round because it's good for developing character...especially when he loses.  Grin.  Our other children don't seem to have a strong opinion either way but almost always join in for fun.

We were given the opportunity to review a memory game created by The Classical Historian.  This company creates products to teach students history through age appropriate activities.  The memory games are designed for children ages 3 and older and teach chronology, geography, and historical image recognition.  Our memory game covered Medieval History but there are additional memory games covering different time periods.

The game comes packaged nicely in a sturdy, colorful box with game pieces that need to be punched out.  The game pieces are made of thick, glossy cardboard with high quality images.  Each card shows an image and text naming the image.

Instructions are included to play this 64-card memory game in two ways.

The first way to play involves matching images in the same style as the classic children's version of memory...placing cards picture side down and taking turns flipping over two at a time to find a match.

The second way to play is to place the cards in the correct category - Europe, The Americas, Far East, and Arabia.  The player who categorizes the cards most quickly is the winner.  It is important to note that you must keep the paper instructions for the key to which images go in each of the four categories.  I was concerned that we might lose the instructions, therefore the answer key, so I taped it to the inside of the box lid.

My boys, ages 9 and 10, played the second version of this game by categorizing the pictures under the correct heading.  I didn't time them when they played the game.  I was curious to see how many cards they would place in the correct category since we had studied the Middle Ages this past school year.  They did quite well!  Now that they are familiar with the categories and images, I think it will be fun to time each of them.  Maybe a little brotherly competition?!

I attempted to have my 3 year old and 6 year old play the memory version of this game, but it was hard to get them interested.  In part, I think it was because I used all the cards for the game...that's 64 cards!  They were overwhelmed.  Next time, I will choose about half of the cards to play the game.

While I didn't play the game as intended with the younger children, we enjoyed looking through the game pieces and pointing out things that we found interesting about the images.  Doing this activity has value in itself as an avenue to expose the children to topics, people, places, and artwork we will encounter again in the future.

Overall, I really like the idea behind this memory game series because they have value for the whole family.  They have a simple enough strategy to allow little ones to play and are stimulating enough for older children and adults to learn and review.  The approach to learning is a fun and non-direct instructional time...your kids might not even realize they are learning about history while playing!  I always appreciate activities like this because they seem less "schoolish" to my kids.  Because of that, they are usually quick to jump right in and get involved.  We did enjoy playing this game together!

{Family} No Trespassing

The boys have been bitten by the spring bug and even though the temps have been in the 20s, they've been busy at work in their fort.  For hours.  Oh, it's so good for all of us when they are outside for long chunks of time.  The boys get to use up their boy energy and Mama does not need to divert or squash their energy in the house!  Grin!

First up...securing the perimeter and marking the entrance.

I'm so thankful for our teensy bit of woods here in suburbia.  This area was "given" to the boys to do as boys will do...no digging or trampling the landscaping anywhere else.  When the foliage is in bloom it is difficult to even see the road or neighbor's houses!

The boys are standing in the hole they are digging.  It's going to be a very deep hole, so I'm told.

Hello, I'm a mom of boys...

And I'm a pro at doing laundry.

{Project 365} Day 18: Lego Car Races

We spent all day at Strong National Museum of Play with our fabulous cousins.   We were able to see the new Lego exhibit that unexpectedly opened a day early!  Super fun for our Lego lovers!

I even made it into a picture with Silas.  Yay!

Creationary

Lego lovers love Creationary.  At least mine do.

The boy who generally doesn't like board games likes this game...he loves Legos and he has a great imagination for building.

Jedi Warrior

Elijah has been asking me for months to make him a Jedi cape.  The other two boys seemed a bit indifferent to whether I made them each one as well or not, but since I was going to be making one they answered..."Sure, I'll take one if you're going to be making them!"

I've had the material for at least a month...and have been asked every time the whir of the sewing machine could be heard whether I was working on capes or not.  Pretty much not...ever.

Finally, this past weekend, I took the time to make not one, not two, but three Jedi capes for my Star Wars loving boys.  They love them!  I'm pleased with how they turned out...just kinda figured it out as I went!  Ahh...serendipity!!!

Yup, he has been wearing his without much of a break.

I feel quite safe in our home now, too, with three Jedi warriors protecting us!  He, he!

Defending

We're the first house on our cul-de-sac street. By default, that makes us the defenders of the street...a responsibility we take very seriously.

The only downside is deciding in a split second who is a neighbor and who is an invader...I fear we may have fired upon several allies since we have only lived here for six months...

*In truth...the boys are allowed to aim and fire when there aren't any cars pulling into our street...when a car does turn in, they are supposed to cease fire and aim elsewhere...*

In the Woods

Since daddy is away for work all week...six days (the longest he's ever been away...boo!), in California, on the beach, weather in the 60s-70s...I realize that we're gonna have to make the best of this week!

Of course, I came up with a brilliant idea...hiking at Mendon Ponds on the Birdsong Trail. The boys walk, Mama pulls Sadie in her sled. It was gonna be perfect, I tell ya!

But then we arrived and set foot on the trail...no snow! We had enough snow at our house for the sled. Of course, I didn't bring the stroller because we were going to use the sled!

Sadie hated it. She did not want to walk. I did not want to carry her all the way. Luke even offered to help carry her but bowed out after a few steps because she was "too heavy."

Epic fail.

We had to do something for 2.5 hours before a pediatrician visit...

I suggested that the boys go run in the woods and make an adventure while I sat and snuggled Sadie on the bench.

So pitiful...

"I wanna go home..."

Oh my...this boy is handsome! (I LOVE taking portrait shots of my kids!!!)

This boy...just as handsome!!!

Another handsome boy??? Why, yes!!!

Sadie didn't cry the whole time...as long as I was holding her. I just kept giving her kisses in the woods and telling her how much I love her. (Thank you, Luke, for taking this fabulous picture!)

Holding Sadie made picture taking a little hard. But I still think I got some great shots!!! I need to remember when I have my sunglasses on, I have a harder time seeing my exposure level...take those sunglasses off!

When fingers and toes got cold, we headed to Honeoye Falls for Chinese buffet, then on to the pediatrician.

In the end we had a great outing...fresh air, sunshine, lots of snuggles and kisses, and a few hours to occupy our time making this week to by more quickly.

Snowman

This has been the most unusual winter...barely any snow, fairly mild temperatures, and the kids being "trapped" inside because it's usually too mucky, rainy, and wet to play outside.

But not this day...

He's so cute (Elijah, I mean...).

That's really why I posted this picture.

A Colorful Day

I had an appointment at the salon following lunch today...

I'm so blessed by this life God has given me...

Do you see how I even try to wear bright colors to brighten our lives? It's been a colorful day here in so many ways - a shorts & t-shirt picnic party on the floor, salon styles, lots of snuggling, feeding the birds our leftover waffles, and tucking in schoolwork in all the rest of the cracks...

(A big thanks to Elijah for taking the pictures with mama in them! Great job, buddy!!!)

This is *probably* the last post for today...three in one day...probably why we haven't done any read alouds today yet. He, he!!!

Wanted

Spotted some cowboys with rifles pokin' 'round the ranch. They posted these here things on my corral...

...now I'm afeared for my life.

Weekend in Review

We thoroughly enjoyed this past weekend...some work, lots of play. I realized that since we moved, I've spent very little time outside always feeling like there is work to do inside the house. Soaking up the sunshine as much as I could...

While everyone played and Sadie napped, I sat on the front step prepping peppers for the freezer...some of the final harvest from our church co-op garden. I'm very thankful for the produce we harvested this year and praying that next summer will allow us to spend more hours there helping throughout the entire season.

We've been so blessed to find out that our neighbors two doors down are Christians. They have two boys, ages 11 and 13, who are stellar young men that I absolutely encourage our boys to befriend. Sundays afternoons have been filled with football in the yard.

Even Mike got in on the game in between projects...

Bags and bags of peppers and squash...

My four favorite guys...

a few of our trees...such variety of color all around our house!

Elijah climbing and swinging

It was Isaac's idea to hang the rope so he could climb and swing...sure beats the inside alternative of swinging from the banister. I've put a nix on that activity...
